Entry Requirements for Australian Universities and Colleges
Entry Requirements for Australian Universities and Colleges
There are two different types of entry requirements every student has to meet to study in Australia: English Language and Academic Requirements.
English Language Requirements
Please note that different Australian education institutions have different English language requirements for different courses. However, please see the general guidance for some programmes:
- VET Courses (Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Associate degree) – IELTS = 5.5-6.0
- Undergraduate Degree Courses – IELTS = 6.0-6.5
- Postgraduate Courses (Graduate Certificate/Diploma, Master, MBA, PhD) – IELTS = 6.0-6.5
Please note that programmes in Law, Medicine, Interpreting, Journalism and some others may require higher level of English language proficiency.
Some nationalities are exempt from meeting English language requirements.
Academic Requirements
Please note that different Australian education institutions have different academic requirements for different courses. However, please see the general guidance for some programmes:
VET Courses (Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Associate degree)
Most programmes would require a completed secondary school qualification, however, creative courses are more likely to request a portfolio, and some courses might require work experience
Undergraduate Degree Courses
The requirement to gain entry into Bachelor degree is to have an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (Year 12), or the overseas equivalent. If the secondary school certificate in your country is not considered as equivalent, then students would need to complete a Foundation or relevant Diploma course, also known as a bridging course. These programmes are offered by most education institutions in Australia.
Postgraduate Courses (Graduate Certificate/Diploma, Master, MBA, PhD)
All postgraduate programmes require students to have a completed undergraduate degree. Some programmes can accept students with a degree in any subject, which means it does not necessarily need to be relevant to a subject that students would like to study at postgraduate level. If the student is applying to a research degree, then he/she would have to submit a research proposal in the field of studies they are interested in. Most MBA programmes would require students to have a work experience and provide GMAT certificate.
